Villanelle
It was the brightness of the day,
In the spring and morning hours,
That clutched my heart and made it sway.
Though school still reigned over my way
How could I resist May’s lovely flowers?
It was the brightness of the day.
Though the sweet be hidden in the fray,
Even all April’s fragrant showers
Clutched my heart and made it sway.
So on we move through April and May,
My mind and body lose their powers,
It was the brightness of the day.
I forfeit to the sprinklers’ gentle spray
And to the lilacs, pansies, and ivy towers
That clutched my heart and made it sway.
Ever twirling in a grassy craze
Spring so cruel, my mind it devours,
It was the brightness of the day
That clutched my heart and made it sway.
